The Jewish Face of Lwów: Portraiture in a Multiethnic City, 1890s-1930s
on Thursday, 29 November at 18:00
at the Jewish Studies Department auditorium (r. 115, 1st fl.), Św. Jadwigi 3/4
The pre-war Jewish museum in Lwow boasted an impressive collection of Jewish portraits. Who were the people depicted on them? Who were their artists? We will explore Lwow portraits as a window on the pre-war urban Jewish community and explore how it represented, integrated, and re-imagined itself in the cultural, intellectual, and political realm of the multiethnic city. Based on a power-point presentation, the English-language lecture will be followed by Q&A in English, Ukrainian, and Polish.
