Marian Turski was born Mosze Turbowicz on June 26, 1926 in Druskieniki. He is a Polish historian and journalist of Jewish origin. From 1942 he was in the Lodz ghetto, from which he was deported in August 1944 to the German concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau. In January 1945, during the evacuation of the camp, he survived the death march of prisoners from Auschwitz to Wodzisław Śląski, from where he was then transported to KL Buchenwald. Turski settled in Warsaw after World War II. From 1945, he was active in the youth organization of the Polish Workers Party, and then worked in the Press Department of the Polish United Workers Party. Marian Turski has been head of the history desk of the weekly “Polityka” since 1958.
